Just east of the Bridge of Lions on Anastasia Bvld. is a small market full of unusual fare. Pieter Nel and Donah Parent, owners of Fresh Market Island, bring grass-fed beef, seafood, gourmet cheeses and more to their little shop. Pieter is from South Africa and has a loyal following of fellow countrymen and women shopping there. Soups, chowders, puff pastry pies, tuna salad, curry noodle salad are some of the specialties made in-house in the "grab-'n-go" section of the store. Everything has no preservatives, no additives and is 100% fresh. Try some Bobotie (So. African beef casserole) or bangers (fresh pork sausages), or boerewors (beef sausages) for an unusual treat. Local farmers' and purveyors' products apparent throughout the Fresh Market Island - Versaggi greens, Minorcan Mike's datil pepper salsa, Ft McCoy ranch eggs (Ocala), Sebago potatoes - are a testament to Pieter and Donah's pride in their market. They support cultural foodways through the inclusion of diverse ethnic food preparations.Their fresh meats selection includes organic and grass fed selections.
