Chef/Owners Tim and Barbara Felver open The French Pantry Bakery for a long day, sending breads to inns, restaurants, and shops throughout the Jacksonville area. But the restaurant that shares this space is only open from 11 AM to 2 PM on weekdays. Located in an industrial area in the middle of warehouses along Powers Avenue, it’s easy to miss so watch for their green awning and lots of cars. On an average day you’ll also see the line out the door.
Inside the daily specials are on a chalkboard as you enter. The seating is country style and you will be seated with fellow diners and you’ll meet some fine folks. The food is the main attraction here. Take time to look at the blackboard, watch the dishes go by for inspiration and check the dessert case. If you’re alert, you will be able to do all of this before you get to the counter to place your order.
You’ll find Panini’s with additions like sun-dried tomato mayonnaise, soups that are really homemade and you may want to try a favorite, Jumbo Bang Bang Shrimp. The bruschetta is unlike anything you’ve ever had and the salads are filled with a variety of local greens, many with a creamy artisinal goat cheese. Desserts are old-fashioned and baked each morning, diner sized, with the pure butter and cream that only mom would bestow on the family.
The French Pantry is one of the finest artisinal bakeries in the First Coast region so be sure to take some loaves of bread home with you.
